The City of Garland Health Department is pleased to announce the winners of the 2019 Food Sanitation Excellence Awards.  These winners scored in the top five percent of their class on unannounced food inspections during the previous year.  In addition to receiving an award certificate to display for one year, each establishment will have its annual health permit fee (from $250 to $450) waived for 2020.

The awards are based on scores (100 being perfect) from unannounced inspections made between October 1, 2018 and September 30, 2019.  Eleven classes were established to ensure fair competition among diverse establishments.

Council approves new food establishment ordinance

On Nov. 19, 2019, the Garland City Council voted to amend Chapter 22 of the Garland Code of Ordinances. The major changes are as follows:

  • Any food establishment earning a score below 60 three times in an 18-month period may have their food permit permanently revoked.
  • An establishment that has had their permit permanently revoked cannot be sold to a relative, friend, or business partner for a period of 180 days.
  • Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, all food establishments shall post their last restaurant score at or near the entrance of the establishment in plain view of the public.  Signs will be provided by the Garland Health Department.
